Achieving Net Zero Through Your Commmercial Premises

In a step towards the governments strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2050, if you have a commercial or tenanted space you must ensure these premises are energy efficient.

Having a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your premises is a mandatory requirement as well as ensuring your rating complies with the minimum Energy Efficiency Standard.

EPC’s use an A-G rating scale based on energy bill costs of running the building.

An EPC certificate is valid for 10 years.

In line with the government strategy to Net-Zero, the grade requirement is changing over the years.

If your premises does not meet the rating requirement, you must make improvements to your premises to increase your energy efficiency rating or you could be liable for costly penalties.

The Race To Net Zero

We have all heard the term Net-Zero but what does this actually mean and how does this affect your business? Tackling climate change is at the top of the agenda for countries and companies and one way to reach this is by achieving net zero.

In June 2019, the UK Government committed to reducing the UK’s net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 100% by 2050. The UK was the worlds first major economy to set a legally binding target of being net zero by 2050. This target is known as net zero, and milestones towards moving to a net zero emissions economy are now set down in UK law. Being net zero means adding no more greenhouse gases to the Earth’s atmosphere than the amount you are taking out.

Net Zero is intended to help lessen these climate-changing effects and limit global warming levels that are safer for the worlds population. The Prime Minister announced £1 billion of funding to continue our support for the decarbonisation of buildings through improved energy efficiency. By encouraging; sectors, industries, organisations and individuals to work together in cutting carbon emissions, the hope is that over the coming decades the UK can achieve its net zero ambitions. Consequently, this will help reduce global warming and the effects of climate change.

Carbon Neutral Vs Net-Zero

Is There A Difference Between Being Carbon Neutral And Net-Zero?

Being Carbon Neutral does not necessarily mean that you are net zero as you might not be reducing your carbon emissions but only offsetting them.

The past six months have seen a sharp rise in the number of government consultations on energy policy that require participation from across the construction industry. Policymakers are recognising the need to collaborate with specialists to improve the energy efficiency of domestic and commercial properties in the effort to meet net-zero carbon targets.

Carbon Neutral

If you are a carbon neutral business you are offsetting the carbon emissions you produce, perhaps by planting trees or supporting renewable energy programmes.

Net Zero

Net Zero is all about helping to reduce the greenhouse gases to zero that already existing in the Earths atmosphere.
